Avian Influenza Prevention in Cambodia: Community ForumsBy Tongngy Kaing April 17, 2012 Bird flu posters and soap bars, provided by FHI 360, were distributed to the forum participants. FHI 360 also sponsored five village health workers and three heath officers from commune, district, and province level to participate in each forum. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shouldered all expense of the forums. The community forums were further actively supported by local authorities and government officials. Figure 19: While participants are watching AI educational spots before the forum starts, village vets and students are actively preparing packages. Figure 20: A participant gets this package and some big posters. Figure 21: Posters like this were delivered to the people. "Report immediately," states the poster. Figure 22: Posters are very popular among the villagers. "I am going to stick it on my wall at home," a villager said, when ask what he was going to do with the poster. Figure 23: Keep your new poultry away for 14 days, the poster reads. Figure 24: A village vet is giving two soap bars to participants. Figure 25: Together for No Bird Flu in Cambodia- keep chicken away from ducks, wash your hands after touching chickens or their remains, clean and burn poultry's remains, take away sick chickens or ducks, and keep new chickens or ducks away for two weeks before releasing them with the old ones. Figure 26: During the forum, participants listen carefully. "The more we know about AI, the more we know how dangerous it is. I do not usually care about AI, but after this forum, I will be more careful with my chickens," a participant said to his friends. Unfortunately, during my trip back from Kandal, a new suspected H5N1 case in Kampong Chhnang was reported. An official press release from Ministry of Health on April 2 confirmed that a six-year-old girl had died of H5N1. These fora were paid for by USAID under MID-BCC.
