Vientiane Market Hygiene Trainings

By Noi Xaymounvong

April 4, 2012

With the Pi Mai (Lao New Year) coming up during the second week in April, Laotians will head to the market to prepare for their celebrations. A spike in the volume of trading and slaughtering of poultry presents a heightened risk of disease transmission, so MID-BCC has collaborated with the Lao Ministry of Health to implement a clean market campaign to reduce the risk of avian influenza and other infectious diseases.

Figure 1: This photo is in Thongkhankham market, Chanthabouly District, Vientiane. In the photo is the meats section, including poultry, fish and seafood. The poster is talking about hand washing every time after touching raw meat, which could prevent some diseases.

Figure 2: Dr. Phongsavay Chanthaseng, technical staff from the Department of Hygiene and Prevention, MOH, who gave the hygiene training to the participants.

Figure 3: Participants practice and follow the steps of how to wash hands the correct way from the facilitator.

Figure 4: Dr. Siphay Vongsouangtham, technical staff from Center for Information and Education for Health, MOH, who also gave information to the participants on hand washing. Here, she asks for real experiences of how participants wash their hands.

Figure 5: The cleaning equipment (water bucket, soap, brush and hand towel) that we gave to the participants who attended our training. rather than give them the perdiem.

Figure 6: The cleaning equipment was the incentive for people who came to participate in the activity rather than give them the per diem.

Figure 7: Hand washing demonstration from a vendor in Thongkhankham market.

Figure 8: Poultry table cleaning demonstration. This table was provided by USAID in the past project of World Health Organization and MOH.

Figure 9: The speaker system in the market. During our training we had some vendors come to our training but we used this sound system to broadcast the message that we would like to send out to all vendors and customers.
